Silicone joints that are neat, flexible and watertight

Wherever two surfaces meet, or where a building moves, silicone is the right material. We apply it cleanly so the line is straight and the joint does its job.

Grout is rigid. Silicone is not. Corners, junctions between tiles and fixtures and movement joints all need a flexible seal, or the joint cracks and lets water through.

We apply silicone to joints that have none, or that were grouted when they should have been sealed, and finish it so the line is even from end to end.

What this covers

  • Shower corners and floor junctions

The joints most exposed to water, sealed with a mould-resistant silicone suited to wet areas.

  • Baths, basins and sinks

A clean, continuous edge where fixtures meet tiles.

  • Splashbacks and benchtops

Neat seals that keep moisture and food debris out of the gap behind.

  • Movement joints

Flexible joints that let large tiled surfaces move without cracking.

How the job runs

  1. 1

    Check the joint

We make sure the joint is clean, dry and the right size and depth for a proper seal.

  2. 2

    Mask the edges

Tape is applied either side so the finished line is crisp.

  3. 3

    Apply and tool

Silicone is applied in one continuous run and smoothed so there are no gaps or bumps.

  4. 4

    Remove tape and cure

Tape is removed while the silicone is workable. We explain how long to keep the area dry.

Why do it this way

  • A flexible seal that moves with the building
  • Water kept out of the joint and from behind tiles
  • Straight, even lines
  • A suitable silicone for wet areas, not a general-purpose tube

Silicone: common questions

  • Why is silicone used in corners, not grout?

Corners are where surfaces move. Grout is rigid and cracks when they do. Silicone stays flexible and keeps the joint sealed.

  • How long before I can use the shower?

Silicone needs to cure before it gets wet. The time depends on the product and conditions, and we tell you for your job.

  • Will silicone go mouldy?

Wet areas that stay damp can grow mould on any silicone eventually. Mould-resistant products last longer, and good ventilation and cleaning help.

  • Can silicone be painted?

Most silicone cannot be painted over. If you need a paintable sealant for a particular joint, tell us and we will use the right product.
